The ability to communicate through language is one of humanities greatest achievements. It not only underscores our ingenuity and creativity but also highlights the significant importance of expression itself. Whether written, spoken or performed, our freedom of speech is quintessential for fostering deep personal relationships and transcendent spiritual experiences – both of which our retreat aims to capture.

In Occitanie, the heart of our retreat’s location, the Occitans living in the 11th Century, developed a unique form of expression combining poetry and music performed by Troubadours. While their exact origins remain somewhat obscure, historians suspect they were influenced by the Latin Gregorian Chants and the Arabic “tarab” which means song, poetry and intense emotion. The songs significantly enriched Occitan society, blending themes of courtly love, eroticism, war, nature, political satire and philosophy. Often performed in defiance of the Papacy, their songs focused on Courtly Love challenging the cultural norms of their time.

In noble marriages, love was rarely a consideration; instead, unions were often dictated by political alliances to consolidate power and wealth. Birthright took precedence over personal needs or desires, with the primary purpose being the protection and expansion of the nobility’s land, influence and family line.

Courtly Love, however, was not concerned with property and ownership but focused on human need and desire. Troubadour songs celebrated this form of love that encompassed both earthly pleasure and spiritual transcendence. Birthright was unimportant but equanimity was highly regarded. The nobleman acknowledged the autonomy of his amour, who was not an object to be possessed, but a person to gain one’s respect. To prove his love worthy, he was required to demonstrate joy, honor and heroism.

Our retreat is inspired by three core values reflected in the Troubadours works that personify the history and cultural landscape of Occitanie: joy, equanimity, and nobility of heart and mind. Accordingly, true nobility was defined not by wealth or birth, but by character and action.

As we prepare for our retreat, we want to impart these values and share in the work of Vinx and a Troubadour experience. We acknowledge that our timeline is undergoing significant changes that somewhat mirror conditions of 800 years ago. Our choices we make today will deeply impact future generations. I am confident that Vinx embodies and nurtures the awareness needed for this pivotal moment. The reimagining of the Troubadours’ mystique serves as a powerful theme to inspire creative spaces during our yoga retreat while promising a future that is inclusive and enriching for all.
