Majestic Cathar Castles stand as guardians of the Magdalene Line crowning the mountain peaks like Montségur and anchoring the towns of Carcassone, Limoux, and the Rennes-le-Château famed for inspiring Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code.” These sites echoing the spiritual and cultural struggles of the past are only a short drive away and call us to explore their mysteries.
The Spiritual Wonders
Ten minutes south from our Château, we will explore the grounds where the Dalai Lama considered building a stupa of Buddha Energy. Also nearby, the Arles Way is one of the 5 French Trails that pass through this region guiding you towards the renowned Camino de Santiago. Further afield, the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, in 1858, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a local woman, also awaits. A bit further north, lies the Plum Village, the Buddhist community of mindfulness practice centers and monasteries founded by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.
The Natural Wonders
In addition to the verdant hills of the Pyrenees and the southern beaches of the Mediterranean, this region hosts some of the most beautiful gorges and caves in the world. The Gorges de Galamus to the east are an impressive system of deep gorges that are also well known for the Saint-Antoine hermitage deep within the canyon. Further north and west are caves with prehistoric art and home to Europe’s largest cave system. Within a five minute drive is the enchanting Lac Montbel and River L’Hers where we will enjoy water sports and swimming in the lake.
