The Location – Chalabre – The Backdrop for our Retreat

Chalabre is one of France’s most ancient bastides. Built from the ashes of conflict and ambitions of King Louis IX, Pope Innocence III, Gregory IX and Feudal Lords, the bastides were designed to bring order to society granting residents legal and economic privileges, including freedom, safety, and property ownership.
Blending architectural purpose with communal rights there are hundreds of bastides remaining in France, each telling a story of resilience and unity.

A majority of these bastides are located in the region of our retreat. Formally known as Languedoc-Roussillon, Occitania regained recognition only in 2016. Unlike any other part of France, the Occitanian culture flourished in the High Middle Ages, with many writers and poets using the Occitan language. Their works often featured courtly love and celebrated ideas of religious and social tolerance.
Today, Occitania exists as a living testament to its language, culture, and the values of amor (love), partage (nobility of heart and mind), and convivència (the art of living together).
Chalabre invites those seeking a hidden and magical place, away from the usual touristy places yet still easily accessible. Stroll the tree-lined streets where the aroma of freshly baked pastries from the boulangerie fills the air. Stop in a quaint cafe or restaurant, or pop into the local grocery stores to grab a few snacks before practice. The picturesque bastide of 1,600 French locals and expats welcomes everyone, sharing a strong sense of community rooted in traditions preserved over six centuries.

Join us on our retreat as we tap into the collective consciousness of the Occitanians.
